Emergency Medicine concerns the diagnosis, management and prevention of acute and urgent aspects of illnesses or injuries affecting patients of all age groups that require immediate medical attention.

What does an Emergency Physician do?

Emergency Physicians have the responsibility to initiate resuscitation, stabilisation, investigations and interventions to diagnose and treat acute phase conditions.

They assess and treat a wide range of illnesses, and potentially life-threatening conditions for example:

  • Heart attacks   
  • Fractures            
  • Injuries resulting from car accidents
  • Overdoses
  • Strokes
  • Asthma attacks
  • Pregnancy-related emergencies
