Nuclear medicine is a medical speciality that uses radioactive materials, or radiopharmaceuticals, to assess bodily functions and to diagnose and treat disease.

It is a highly targeted imaging and treatment method.

Only a tiny amount of radioactive substance, called radionuclide, is used during the procedure to assist in the exam. Several different types of radionuclides are available for use depending on the type of study and the body part being studied.

How Does It Work?

By measuring the behavior of the radionuclide in the body during a nuclear scan, the healthcare provider can assess and diagnose various conditions, such as:

  • Tumours
  • Infections
  • Hematomas
  • Organ enlargement
  • Cysts

A nuclear scan may also be used to assess organ function and blood circulation. For therapy purposes, only the targeted lesion would be mainly affected by the emitted radiation.

Nuclear medicine imaging is basically safe and provides mass information for the benefit of patients.
