Spine surgery is not always the first answer — but when it is the right one, precision and experience make all the difference.

Spine surgery is a specialised field of surgery focused on diagnosing and treating conditions affecting the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine — from disc herniation and nerve compression to spinal deformity and instability. When non-surgical treatments such as physiotherapy, pain management, and medication have been attempted but have not provided adequate relief, spine surgery is considered as the most appropriate next step.

At Sunway Medical Centre Penang, spine surgery is performed by a team of specialist spine surgeons and spine specialists with training across

  • Orthopaedic spine surgery
  • Neurosurgical spine surgery
  • Minimally invasive spine surgery
  • Spinal deformity correction
  • Spinal decompression and fusion
  • Complex spinal reconstruction

Care is available for both elective spinal procedures and urgent cases — supported by advanced diagnostic imaging, intraoperative navigation technology, and integrated post-surgical rehabilitation.

Spine Surgery in Penang

Conditions Treated

Our spine surgeons and spine specialists in Penang manage a broad range of spinal conditions affecting the neck, mid-back, and lower back:

  • Disc herniation — cervical and lumbar disc prolapse causing nerve compression, neck pain, back pain, and referred symptoms into the arms or legs
  • Spondylosis — age-related degeneration of the cervical and lumbar spine causing pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility
  • Cervical myelopathy — compression of the spinal cord in the neck causing weakness, numbness, and coordination problems
  • Spondylolisthesis — forward slippage of one vertebra over another causing lower back pain and nerve symptoms
  • Spinal stenosis — narrowing of the spinal canal causing nerve compression, leg pain, and difficulty walking
  • Scoliosisabnormal lateral curvature of the spine affecting both adolescents and adults
  • Degenerative disc disease — progressive disc wear causing chronic neck or back pain
  • Nerve root compression — pinched nerves causing radiating pain, numbness, or weakness in the arms or legs

Spine Surgery Procedures

Our spine surgery team in Penang offers a full range of surgical procedures — from minimally invasive interventions to complex spinal reconstruction. Treatment decisions are made collaboratively between the patient and their spine surgeon, based on clinical findings, imaging results, and individual health factors.

1. Discectomy

Surgical removal of the herniated portion of a spinal disc that is pressing on a nerve root or the spinal cord. Discectomy is one of the most commonly performed spine procedures and is highly effective for patients with disc herniation causing persistent nerve pain that has not responded to conservative management.

2. Laminectomy and Laminotomy

Surgical removal or trimming of the lamina — the bony arch at the back of a vertebra — to relieve pressure on the spinal cord or nerve roots. Commonly performed for spinal stenosis and cervical myelopathy where nerve compression is causing significant functional impairment.

3. Spinal Decompression and Fusion

Decompression surgery removes bone, disc material, or other structures pressing on spinal nerves. When combined with spinal fusion, the procedure also stabilises the affected spinal segment — preventing movement between vertebrae that is causing pain or instability. Fusion is indicated for spondylolisthesis, degenerative disc disease, and selected cases of spinal deformity.

4. Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF)

A procedure performed through the front of the neck to remove a herniated or degenerative cervical disc and fuse the adjacent vertebrae. ACDF is one of the most reliable surgical approaches for cervical disc herniation and cervical myelopathy causing arm pain, weakness, or spinal cord compression.

5. Scoliosis Correction

Surgical correction of abnormal spinal curvature using instrumentation — including pedicle screws and corrective rods — to straighten the spine, prevent further curve progression, and restore spinal balance. Indicated for curves above 40 to 50 degrees or progressive curves that have not responded to bracing.

Post-Surgical Rehabilitation

Recovery after spine surgery requires structured rehabilitation to restore movement, rebuild core strength, and support the return to daily function. At Sunway Medical Centre Penang, post-surgical spine rehabilitation is supported on-site by a dedicated rehabilitation centre — including physiotherapy, the Super Induction System for muscle reactivation, Neck and Back Traction, and High Power Laser therapy — ensuring continuity of care from the operating theatre through to full functional recovery.
