Orthopaedic surgery is not just about fixing what is broken — it is about restoring the movement, function and quality of life that matters most to each patient.
Orthopaedic surgery is the medical specialty focused on diagnosing and treating conditions affecting the bones, joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and spine — from acute fractures and sports injuries through to complex joint degeneration and spinal conditions requiring surgical correction.
At Sunway Medical Centre Penang, orthopaedic surgery is performed by a team of specialist surgeons with sub-specialty training across
- Arthroplasty
- Spine surgery
- Arthroscopy and sports surgery
- Foot and ankle surgery
- Upper limb and microsurgery
- Paediatric orthopaedics
- Orthopaedic oncology
Care is available for both elective surgical procedures and urgent trauma cases — supported by advanced diagnostic imaging, intraoperative navigation technology, and integrated post-surgical rehabilitation.

Orthopaedic Surgery Procedures
Our orthopaedic surgery team in Penang offers a full spectrum of surgical procedures — from minimally invasive interventions to complex reconstructive surgery. Treatment decisions are made collaboratively between the patient and their orthopaedic surgeon, based on clinical findings, imaging results, and individual health factors.
Orthopaedic surgery also covers trauma cases including sustained injuries to the neck, chest, abdomen, extremities and soft tissue, as well as injuries to the vasculature.
1. Joint Replacement
Knee and hip replacement are among the most commonly performed orthopaedic procedures — indicated when joint degeneration has progressed to the point where daily function and quality of life are significantly affected. Shoulder replacement is also available for selected cases of advanced joint damage.
- Total and partial knee replacement — including MAKO robotic-assisted surgery for more precise implant positioning
- Total hip replacement — including MAKO robotic-assisted surgery
- Shoulder replacement
2. Arthroscopy and Minimally Invasive Surgery
Knee arthroscopy uses small keyhole incisions and a camera to diagnose and treat problems within the joint — including ligament repair, meniscus treatment, and cartilage procedures — with less tissue disruption and faster recovery compared to open surgery. Shoulder and ankle arthroscopy are also available for selected conditions.
- Knee arthroscopy — ligament repair, meniscus treatment, cartilage procedures
- Shoulder arthroscopy — rotator cuff repair and shoulder stabilisation
- Ankle arthroscopy — ligament and cartilage conditions
3. Spine Surgery
Spine surgery addresses structural conditions that have not responded to conservative management — including disc herniation, nerve compression, and spinal instability. Lumbar spinal and sacroiliac joint fusion are available for selected cases, supported by the Medtronic O-arm™ O2 Imaging System and StealthStation™ S8 Navigation System for sub-millimetre intraoperative guidance.
- Lumbar spinal fusion and sacroiliac joint fusion
- Disc herniation and nerve decompression surgery
- Minimally invasive spine surgery
4. Fracture and Trauma Management
Timely repair of fractures is essential to restore alignment, support healing, and protect long-term movement and function. Orthopaedic surgery covers the full range of fracture and trauma cases — from simple fractures requiring fixation through to complex multi-fragment injuries and trauma involving the neck, chest, abdomen, extremities, soft tissue, and vasculature.
- Surgical fixation of complex fractures
- Joint reconstruction following trauma
- Management of orthopaedic trauma from accidents, falls, and sports incidents
5. Upper Limb and Microsurgery
Upper limb surgery addresses conditions of the hand, wrist, and elbow — including tendon repair, nerve decompression, and microsurgical reconstruction for complex injuries affecting fine motor function and daily independence.
- Hand and wrist tendon repair
- Carpal tunnel release and trigger finger surgery
- Microsurgical reconstruction
6. Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgery
Children's orthopaedic conditions require specialist assessment that accounts for their stage of growth and development. Paediatric orthopaedic surgery at Sunway Medical Centre Penang covers congenital conditions, growth-related problems, and fractures in active children and adolescents.
- Scoliosis correction
- Developmental hip conditions
- Paediatric fracture management
